E-14 Tempest

E-14 Tempest:  Defense Class
Real name: English Electric Lightning

A real life shot of an English Electric lightning

The E-14 Tempest is what you might call a beginners upgrade.  I remember when I first started playing, I was excited that I had the option of upgrading my plane.  With the small amount of credits that I had, I had a choice between the Tempest and the F-7 Wraith.  At the time, I had no clue on the differences between plane classes so I basically picked which plane I thought was the coolest looking.  It turned out to be a mistake.  I started flying the Tempest (with 1 or 2 tech upgrades) in versus matches and quickly found that I was getting my ass kicked in a whole variety of ways.  The Tempest is just not much of a plane for versus matches and I do not recommend spending much time, credits or coins on this antique.

See PLANE COMPARISON TABLES for detailed assessment of all the planes performance ratings.

Now days, when I see that I am flying up against a Tempest, I lick my chops and get ready to score some kills.  With a Hawken, I can usually get 8-10 kills on a Tempest.  They are slow and ponderous planes and even though they are defense class, their armor isn't very impressive.  The Tempest might be ok for campaign and survivor mode, but if you want to do any type of versus mode dogfighting, forget it.  If anyone has anything positive to say about the Tempest, please chime in.  My recommendation is to save your credits and coins for a Hawken and don't waste your time with the Tempest.  (You will see this similar recommendation for many of the lower cost bargain planes).   If you are a beginner and looking to upgrade, go with the F-7 Wraith or if you like speed, stick with the Annihilator and make some upgrades.  Either choice would be better than this dog.

  1. The real life plane of the tempest is not the F-86. It is the English Electric lightning!

  2. Thanks for the clarification, I've made the correction. The 2 look similar. I see now that the English Electric Lightning has the double rear engines. Appreciate the help :-)

  3. You should have seen the tempest in the right hands. The tempest can do a little(?) more than we expect. I hope you meet the right one in vs mode someday. Even top ace players in high-tier agility planes have a hard time catching it. I'm sure it will make you want to fully upgrade your tempest and fly in it. :)

  4. The Tempest is not that good. It's slow and has poor armour but does have an unusual sense of style compared to the other planes. Overall it's good on campaign and survival but on versus your toast!

  5. The Tempest is a terrible plane to buy, but imagine if there was a re-skinned model that was featured in Metal Storm....... I'd be interested.

    2. it is a mig-19 not a electric lighting-it does not have the stacked engines

    3. right: MiG-19 had side by side engines (as opposed to the
MiG-17, which had a single engine)

  6. I think that the tempest is better than an annihilator. I had a falcon which has more agility than an annihilator but it was hardly more agile than the tempest and the tempest had way more armor. I haven't tried the tempest in versus mode though.

  7. I just versed an annihilator. I used a u-9 raider and standard issue while he had rams and an Osiris cannon. We versed twice and I beat him 1-0 both times. He was trying to escape from me most of the time. Add me : Lonah 1 or lonah 1.

    1. Well then the annihilator player is a complete noob. Not the plane is bad. Annihilator IS a very good plane when fully upgraded.

  8. You're kidding me.... Have you upgraded an Annihilator?? Agility class is way more agile than defense class IF and ONLY IF you fully upgrade it

  9. I just noticed that I forgot to upgrade my falcon. Doesn't agility just mean that you can turn more?

    1. No it means you can dodge more missiles which is handy and you can get more speed.

    3. In versus I beat someone with my tempest and it was not very hard it was actually pretty easy. Add me on Game Center: what is awesome!

  11. Okay is a really skill pilot is given a not upgraded tempest with standard weapons, he will still kill the rookie pilot with fully upgraded Green Eagle with Bisnovats and Hades!

    2. ain't got a chance. what makes you believe that? tried that once and lost to an arbiter 2-1. tried it against a dragon and lost 4-2. Made it to wave 15 though.

  12. i got a tempest as my first plane but it was a bad decision. sometimes i find that even a skilled pilot can be defeated if you are flying something better than a tempest. i beat a pilot 6-0 who was using a tempest with more skill points than me when i was using a raven (my favourite jet so far)in vs mode.

  13. Gamecenter friend request a guy called LORD OF TEMPEST only then will you get a clear idea of what this little caged beast can do ( he uses stocks too if you have any doubts ) 8D

    1. Actually thier two of them [MMDF] Lord of tempest and and [MMDF] OBIWAN (sf), both are highly skilled pilots of the tempest! So far i could only get a draw from this 2 pilots using c101, no matter how ive tried to cracked and shut them down they just keep coming back up. This two 2 pilots are good and a decent player. Their out of the country so,if you guys want to play w/ them and test their skills, be up early in the morning. They usually start playing around 4:00 am central time (usa).

  14. I'm fairly new to the game, but i have a Tempest, fully upgraded, and an Eagle-X, half-upgraded. whenever i stumble onto the vs. battlefield in my eagle, i get shredded by either higher armored defense, more agile agility, or better stocked weapons. my tempest, on the other hand, has seen me through a 10:1 win:loss ratio, and i never use anything other than stock (saving up for one big push on survival). i think the best part about this is the lack of appreciation for its abilities, and thus opponents underestimate it. For example, against someone else's eagle-x, i won 3-1, and again with 2-1. he was pissed, to say the least, and i realized the awesomeness of my little tempest. if you know how to fly it, and take advantage of its low cost and (surprisingly) massive armor, then you can tear through anything you come into contact with.

  15. The tempest actually really sucks but handled right it can be good. Metal storm is more about skill then what equipment you have. I have a fully upgraded dragon but get regularly thrashed by other pilots flying falcons and c101(their skill rating is higher then mine.

  16. Recently I played against someone who had a Tempest with Bisnovats, the Zeus cannon, and an SR of a little less than 350 (150 less than the starting SR). I was flying my trusty Thresher with RAAMs and Valkyrie, and I blew him up three times in about 30 seconds before he raegquit. That had to be the easiest battle I've ever fought against Bisnos, but I'm still scratching my head about how I, with ~4100 SR, got matched against someone with only ~350.

  17. Sucks... Tempest are synonyms. I had tempest for a month and still haven't won vs match or got past wave 5. Gave up. Now happily using 1/2 upgraded wraith

  18. Tempest is okay if you use it properly. Unfortunately, most people just buy it because it looks funny and then give up on it the first time they lose. If u have extra time, I recommend u upgrade a tempest and try it out. You need a very unique stle to make it work though.:(

  19. I decided to fly my tempest in vs mode because I wanted to see my skills after flying the hawken. I went against this guy who had a hawken and bisnovats as missiles! I ended up draw 4 times and lost one. It took 6 bisnos fired within 40 seconds to destroy my half upgraded plane. It takes 4 bisnos within that time to take down my hawken! In the right hands a tempest can still beat any plane

  20. You will appreciate how good this little unknown and unappreciated plane called Tempest when fly correctly. Of course the bottom line is that the opponent must play fairly, meaning on a level playing field. As it is, the little Tempest is just a BASIC and BEGINNER plane, therefore, the opponent should not use coin weapons to play with this disadvantaged machine, if fun means anything to the players.

  21. I fly the Tempest `and it is my favorite plane. This thing can be really good in the right hands. Sure it gets toast in versus matches but still all u people who dont like the Tempest, get out and start upgrading! Only then will you appreciate how beast it is! Please follow my advice cause it seriously offends me when u guys say that the tempest sucks

  22. i got through all my missions with tempest

  23. it is awesome in the right hands. BUT only if you know how to use it properly
