Plane of the Day: The Smokin Fast F-106 Thresher

Next up for review is the F-106 Thresher.   Modeled after the F-22 Raptor, this agility class plane is one friggin blazing fast mofo.  Flying a fully upgraded Thresher for the first time is kinda like jumping on the back of a pissed off hypersonic tiger.  It is definitely hard to control this speed demon and will test your reflexes to the max.  This plane is one of the best agility class planes in the fleet.

The Thresher is based on the real-life F-22 Raptor

The tech upgrades for this plane are as follows:
Acceleration, Top Speed, Agility, Cannon Cooldown, Energy Regeneration, Armor (not much), Cannon Damage, Damage reduction vs Cannons, Top Speed, Missile Damage, Armor Regeneration (3%), Energy Regneration, Missile Tracking, Critical Strike Rating, Maneuver Speed, Evasion, and Damage reduction while your energe is greater than 85%, Energy regeneration while your energy is less than 35%.

As you can see, most of the tech upgrades are speed, acceleration and agility related.  This plane has the armor of a hummingbird and is easily destroyed even with the armor upgrades.  One nice upgrade, however, is the 3% armor regeneration– its not much (nothing compared to a green eagle) but it will allow your health to slowly creep upward if you manage to stay alive for long stretches.

If you have a fully upgraded Thresher, you will be capable of taking on anyone out there.  You will be fast enough to outmaneuver even highly ranked players IF you can learn to control that speed.  I have been able to defeat opponents with double my skill rating with the Thresher.  On the other hand, I’ve also been blown up by opponents with half my skill ratings if I get careless.
On the down side, it is hard to score a high number of kills with a Thresher (at least for me).  The Hawken is much more of a brute for laying on the hurt and scoring 8 or 9 kills.  With my Thresher, I usually don’t get near that many kills, even on easier opponents since I am usually peppering them with Cannon fire during high speed passes.  Of note, I never use a Thresher in campaign or survivor mode – it just doesn’t have the armor.

Your opponent will not be thrilled when he see's he has to go up against this hypersonic son of a bitch
Also, as with all agility class planes, this plane shines best in tight quarters and close combat – you can almost always catch up to your opponent if you are circling each other and will tend to use your cannons more as you get quick shots and chances to rattle the enemy with your cannons little by little until he finally goes boom.   If you play up against another Thresher or another agility class plane, get ready for a dizzyingly fast battle.

The Thresher goes for 54,000 credits (at least when I got it).  It is the second most expensive plane out there, I believe, second only to the Hawken (not counting specialty planes).
I really enjoy the Thresher and fly it when I am in the mood for a finesse battle with lots of cannon fire and maneuvering – it really provides the thrill of the dogfight and is a great fighter!

  3. great blog :) By the way, kinda wanna help you edit something.
To play skillfully with agility class, cannon is the main thing. Since cannon damage has been reduced, it is better to use valkyrie when flying agility class

    1. Well said, and as stated on text, playing agility planes results most times on less kills per match, specially against more ranked players, because you need damn more hits to put other class planes (weapons or defense) down, and against agility planes ithe match will be probably very speedy, reducing the kills either way.

  4. Just a note, it is "Energy regeneration while your ARMOR is less than 35%", not "Energy regeneration while your ENERGY is less than 35%." Z2Live had a screwup when writing the text, it actually is based on your Armor level. They admitted to this, and are hopefully fixing it soon (it honestly is a 5 second fix).

  8. Hello guys im on level 24, so I got the thresher and maxed it out, but still getting smoked by others no matter how hard i try to evade by swiping left-right. This thing gets killed so easily, what a waste of investment!!!

    1. you have no skill...
a simple side swipe will not dodge missiles if theyre coin ones, you need to accelerate when going head to head then swipe. it helps if youre going the oposite direction of your swipe but changing direction at the last second

    2. Thresher is a Useless plane in Versus Matches If Others are using Coins missiles... a Person rechaes a level to buy thresher because he has Skills....Bisnovat bitches are Unfair match especially mounted on Long Range High Reload Planes.... My advise is as follows :

      1. Dodge the Missile : Be fast , Manuever in direction opposite to Missile bend making an asymptot to the curve

      2. Try getting to back of Weapons class Plane and CANNON it OUT .. weapon class has ZERO Cannon resist

      3. Do Bull runs away ......take a round big circle and HIT from Behind..

      Cheers , Love

    3. also... dont invest In Dynasty till you have mastered Thresher... Its Not a Great Agility Plane... But you Can WIN !! with any plane..thresher is Not the worst for its Cost.

    4. Do not Invest at all on a plane if You dont feel anything flying it. Try it some times before and then decide. If you decide to upgrade it, do It slowly so if you see you have done a mistake you won't have lost much.

    5. With an Agility plane, you won't feel much flying it until you get all the Agility and Speed upgrades. Then flying it will become the most fun thing ever in the game.

    6. You guys just don't play the game right... My thresher is my plane of choice! Even over the reaper (which I have. My thresher on stalk weapons has gotten me to level 27 on survival, and gotten me (at one point 100 wins out of 106 games, though the stats have changed since then) I don't need fancy weapons to defeat insanely rated weapons or heavily armord defense. The trick is to know how to fly, not hide behind armor or missiles... In my opinion if a pilot could choose just one plane and stick with it (not try all the other planes) they would become a smashing ace at that plane (this applies to missiles too) Don't rag on the thresher if you suck as a pilot...

    7. Dude, first you need to decelerate and swipe to one side while tilting your device to the opposite side. Then, hit the afterburners and accelerate out of there

  9. Since Z2 has an agility class f106 and a defense class f106, they should make an awesome weapons class f106!

    1. I agree. Like the Hawken but Defence and Agility instead of the other 2 weapons class. Good call.

  10. How awesome would that be?

  11. Pretty awesome, because then there would be a full set of f-106s.

  12. I have an Arbiter and a Reaper, both fully upgraded, and despite the Reaper's vastly superior evasion and maneuver speed, I still seem to dodge more missiles in my Arbiter. Maybe it's the comparatively small wingspan? This could be worth getting a Thresher for, if the smaller wingspan makes missiles easier to evade.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I haven't been able dodge ANYTHING with my Reaper in vs mode, not even sidewinders. A missile just flies a couple kilometers behind me, explodes, and does full damage. I've had slightly better luck with my Arbiter, but that sucks in vs mode. I think I'll start saving up for a Thresher, but until then I am not going to play any more vs. mode.

    1. I think the F-22 airframe is just built to dodge.

    2. The reaper has zero evasion increase... the thresher has +5% and the arbiter has an increase (because all defense planes do) agility planes don't have evasion unless it says so in the stats.

  14. I need to know if thresher is better than the hawken i cant decide which one I should buy it would be a help if some one replied to me thanks. :)

    1. Personally, I think the Thresher is awesome and I despise the Hawken. They Hawken is a brute plane for people who have no skill at all, and the Thresher lets people who have skills shine a little brighter.
I'll let you decide which one to get, though.

    2. Remember that the Hawken will be an excellent choice for Campaign mode. The Thresher will be easily destroyed in Campaign and Survival modes.
My above statement applies only to Versus mode.

    3. I went on a victory streak with the Hawken dude. I upgraded my Hawken and dodged like 2 out of every 4 biznos. Get the Hawken, it costs less

  15. I currenty fly a Eagle-X, but im gettng bored of this plane. do you think I should get the Thresher or Hawken? I think Hawken would be too similar to Eagle-X; however, I also think that Thresher is too easily killed. Is the thresher really that weak?

    ReplyDelete

    1. if you have skill, get the thresher

      Delete
    2. The Hawken bests the Eagle with reload lock speed and agility... especially agility... If you are truly a good pilot then you should go for the thresher... butttt if you are so so and need a bit more power and maneuverability but want to maintain the armor go for the Hawken

  16. Like the Paladin, the Thresher's stats reflect those of its real-life counterpart, the F-22 Raptor, rather well. The F-22 is supermaneuverable, quite fast, and uses stealth technology. (I can see why they didn't give the Thresher any stealth, though, it is hard enough to hit as it is :)

  17. I seem to dodge more missiles in my arbiter, which is friggin weird.

    1. I seem to dodge about the same number of missiles in my Arbiter and my Thresher, which is a lot more than what I dodge in my Reaper. Are you talking about dodging missiles in Versus mode, or dodging missiles in Campaign/Survival? Because the Versus mode lag is so ridiculous that dodging missiles is now more about luck than skill. In the other two modes, missiles that don't hit you, DON'T FLIPPING HIT YOU, so dodging seems to work better.

  18. Aven the Raven PilotAugust 11, 2012 at 7:38 PM

I dunno, maybe it's just the fact that I'm used to the Arbiter and that I found out how to use this thing. I just started using a Thresher, so maybe that explains why I don't slam into as many missiles.
(P.S., I am the same anonymous above, but I've changed my name to Aven the Raven Pilot.)

  22. You gotta learn to control this speed. Went to vs against thresher with my black eagle only took him down three times but ended 11-0 because he kept trying to circle me and he was too fast so he crashed into the ground.

    ReplyDelete
  23. thresher is one of the best planes out there its evasion helps me avoid missiles easily, 10% speed is good, 12% agility is also a good stat, i can easily circle around my opponent. extra energy helps especially with non lock hits. lol and to be honest, i have both thresher and reaper but i like thresher better as i dont get hit as often due the extra evasion. also 3% diff in speed and agility is not that significant between reaper and thresher. plus thresher costs credits so IMO its the best plane out there. dont doubt me i have alot of exp my sr is 43k with a 65% win ratio

  24. Thresher, mauruder, hawken, dragon? Which should I get? note that I already have the Nova, bobcat and panther.

  25. Thresher is a huge disappointment to all that cost.......freaking ugly.....no missile reload.....no nothing.....I felt so bad after spending so much credits and medals on this thing.....ah why didn't I just invest in my hawken instead
